Business Consultancy in Riyadh: When You Need It, How to Choose
When does your SME or new investment need outside management advice? A practical guide to growth plans, roles and processes, KPIs, choosing a consultant and the first 90 days.

Many Riyadh businesses reach a point where sales stop growing despite more effort, or the owner becomes the bottleneck because every decision runs through them. That is where business consultancy in Riyadh earns its place: a structured outside view that turns growth goals into a plan, clear roles and KPIs you review every week.
This guide covers when an SME or a new investor needs outside management advice, what good consultancy actually includes, how to choose a consultant, and what a first 90-day engagement looks like. We write from first-hand experience: Manzomia is a foreign-owned, MISA-licensed company that built its own presence in Riyadh step by step.
What does business development and management consultancy cover?
It covers three connected areas: growth and go-to-market planning, organisation and processes, and performance measurement with a small set of KPIs. The goal is not a polished report. It is decisions that get carried out and results you can measure.
Management consultancy does not replace your lawyer or your auditor. They keep you compliant and your accounts accurate; a consultant helps you choose a direction and sequence the work.
| Area | Questions it answers | What you receive |
|---|---|---|
| Growth and go-to-market | Who is our best customer? At what price? Through which channel? | A 90-day growth plan with a budget cap per channel |
| Organisation and processes | Who decides what? Where does work get stuck? | A roles and authority map, plus written core processes |
| Performance | Are we actually improving? What do we check weekly? | A dashboard of 5 to 8 KPIs, each with an owner and a target |
When does an SME or new investor need outside advice?
You need it when the same problem keeps coming back despite your team's efforts, or when you face a big decision that cannot be left to trial and error. These are the most common signals:
- Flat sales for two or three quarters even though marketing spend went up.
- Every decision waits for the owner, so work stops when they are away.
- Expansion ahead: a new branch, a new city or a different product line.
- Entering the Saudi market for the first time: choosing the activity, segment and channels before committing to fixed costs.
- Scattered data: sales in WhatsApp, stock in a spreadsheet and collections in one person's head.
- Moving into a bigger size band, which brings more staff and more obligations.
To see which band you are in, the enterprise size rules issued by the Small and Medium Enterprises General Authority (Monsha'at) classify a business by full-time employees or revenue, whichever gives the larger size:
| Band | Full-time employees | Annual revenue |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | 1 to 5 | Up to SAR 3 million |
| Small | 6 to 49 | SAR 3 million to 40 million |
| Medium | 50 to 249 | SAR 40 million to 200 million |
Moving up a band is a good moment to review roles and systems, because what worked with five people rarely works with twenty.
You may not need a consultant at all if the need is one clear task, such as a website or an ad campaign. Hire a specialist for that task, and keep consultancy for the decisions that change the direction of the business.
How do you build a growth and go-to-market plan for Saudi Arabia?
Start with one or two segments, not the whole market. A plan that tries to reach everyone ends with a budget spread so thin that no channel gets enough.
- Define the best-fit customer: who buys, who decides, and why they would leave their current supplier. In B2B sales, the decision-maker is often not the user.
- Write the value proposition in Arabic first: one sentence on the problem you solve, then an English version for investors and partners.
- Price clearly in riyals: compare against the alternatives your customer already knows, and state what the price includes and excludes.
- Pick two or three channels: search and Google Maps for local demand, WhatsApp for follow-up, LinkedIn or direct sales for B2B, and partnerships where someone else already reaches your customers.
- Map the sales path: first contact, quote, follow-up and collection, with a target response time for each stage.
- Run a 90-day test with a spending cap: agree in advance what success looks like and when you will stop a channel that is not working.
If you are a foreign investor, tie the plan to the activity you will register, because your Commercial Registration (CR) activities must match what you actually sell. Our guide to MISA licence requirements covers that step, and how to start a business in Saudi Arabia as a foreigner walks through the full journey to your first customer.
How should you organise roles and processes as you grow?
Start with responsibilities, not names: which roles the business needs, who owns each decision, and each person's limits on spending, discounts and hiring. Then write down the processes that repeat every week:
- Quote to cash: pricing, approval, invoicing and follow-up.
- Purchasing and stock: who orders, who approves and when to reorder.
- Hiring and onboarding: from the job post to the contract to the first week.
- Customer complaints: who replies, within how many hours, and when to escalate.
- Month-end close: reconciling sales, expenses and the bank statement.
Your compliance calendar is part of management
A lot of operational trouble starts with a missed regulatory date. Keep these in one calendar, with an owner for each:
- Annual CR confirmation: since the new Commercial Register Law took effect on 3 April 2025, an electronic confirmation every 12 months replaces renewal. If it is more than 90 days late, the CR and its linked services are suspended.
- Employee contracts on Qiwa: the Ministry of Human Resources announced that, from 15 April 2026, Nitaqat Saudization rates are calculated from contracts documented on Qiwa.
- VAT returns, if you are registered: monthly or quarterly, depending on your annual supplies.
Then give your data one home: a POS or management system that holds sales, stock and customers, instead of scattered spreadsheets nobody trusts.
Which KPIs should a growing business in Riyadh track?
Choose 5 to 8 KPIs, no more, and give each a fixed definition, an owner, a target and a review date. A business that tracks thirty numbers is not really tracking any of them.

| KPI | How to calculate it | Why it matters | Review |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue growth by segment | This period's revenue against the same period last year | Shows which segment drives growth | Monthly |
| Gross margin | (Revenue − cost of sales) ÷ revenue | Stops growth that loses money on every sale | Monthly |
| Customer acquisition cost | Sales and marketing spend ÷ new customers | Tells you which channels deserve budget | Monthly |
| Lead conversion rate | New customers ÷ leads | Measures follow-up quality, not ad volume | Weekly |
| Days sales outstanding | (Receivables ÷ revenue) × days in the period | Uncollected sales choke your cash | Monthly |
| Cash runway | Available cash ÷ monthly net burn | Warns you well before a cash crunch | Monthly |
| Repeat purchase rate | Returning customers ÷ all customers | Keeping a customer costs less than winning one | Quarterly |
Start with the numbers you have today, even if they are rough, and improve the sources as you go. Regular approximate measurement beats perfect measurement that never starts.
How do you choose a business consultant in Riyadh?
When you compare offers for business consultancy in Riyadh, choose someone who ties the work to measurable results, writes the scope down before starting, and stays with you during implementation. Before you sign, ask:
- Do they know your market and your size of business? Ask for similar examples, and ask who will actually work on your account.
- Are they a registered entity? Ask for their CR and check that its activities include consultancy.
- Is the scope in writing? Deliverables, timeline, exclusions, fees and who owns the outputs.
- How will success be measured? KPIs agreed at the start, not impressions at the end.
- How will they protect your data? A confidentiality agreement, and compliance with the Personal Data Protection Law whenever they see customer data.
- Will they help implement? Or hand over a report and leave?
Warning: be wary of anyone who guarantees government approvals or specific sales figures. Approvals rest with the authority alone, and sales depend on factors no consultant controls.
| Option | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Independent consultant | One defined task on a tight budget | Everything depends on one person's time |
| Specialist boutique firm | SMEs that want planning and implementation together | Check their experience in your sector |
| Large consulting firm | Wide transformation in a large company | Higher cost, and a junior team may run your account |
What does a first 90-day consulting engagement look like?
A good first engagement is short and specific: diagnose, plan, implement with weekly follow-up, then review the numbers. Here is a practical shape for it:

- Diagnose (weeks 1–2): interviews with the owner and team, a review of the last 12 months of numbers, and a look at how work really flows. Output: a short list of the top three problems and their causes.
- Plan (weeks 3–4): quarterly priorities, a 90-day plan, a KPI tree and an owner for every initiative.
- Implement (weeks 5–12): a short weekly meeting, process changes, and the tools and reports to support them.
- Review (end of the quarter): what improved in the numbers, what did not work, and the plan for the next quarter.
What should you prepare before the first meeting?
- Sales for the last 12 months by product and by customer.
- Your income statement, receivables and payables.
- The current structure and who does what.
- The systems you use for accounting, POS and customer management.
- Your CR, licences and any upcoming regulatory deadlines.
- Recurring customer feedback and complaints.
How can Manzomia help you grow?
Manzomia offers business development and management consultancy to SMEs and to investors coming to the Kingdom, and we agree the scope and deliverables with you in writing before we start. We draw on a journey we went through ourselves: we are a foreign-owned, MISA-licensed company, and we handled our own MISA licence, company formation and digital presence in Riyadh.
Our founder has more than nine years of building web and mobile products, and apps he launched reached more than 50 million users. We built Manzomia, our cloud POS, which is live at manzomia.com.
Our work also includes the Al Hamdan Delivery System, with customer and driver apps on Android and iOS and an admin dashboard, and Hoopoe Paints & Hardware, an online ordering platform we built for Al Hamdan. So our advice does not stop at paper: if the plan needs a system, a website or a campaign, the same team delivers it.
If you are still setting up, start with our company formation and CR service, or the Launch in KSA package, which brings licensing, formation, brand and website together.
What is your next step?
Tell us in two lines what your business does and what you want to change in the next six months. Then book a consultation to review where you stand and agree the scope of a first engagement, or request a quote for a defined piece of work.
Frequently asked questions
How much does business consultancy cost in Riyadh?
It depends on scope and duration: a defined project with clear deliverables, or monthly support during implementation. Ask for a written proposal that lists deliverables and fees before you start. At Manzomia we send ours after a short call about your situation.
How long does a first consulting engagement take?
A practical shape is about 90 days: two weeks to diagnose, two weeks to plan, eight weeks of implementation with weekly follow-up, and a review of the numbers at the end of the quarter. It can be shorter or longer depending on your size.
Is a business consultant the same as a company setup agent?
No. Setup services handle investor registration, the CR and government registrations, while consultancy handles growth, organisation and performance. New investors usually need both, and the plan should match the activity you register.
Which KPIs should a small business start with?
Start with revenue growth by segment, gross margin, customer acquisition cost, lead conversion rate, days sales outstanding and cash runway. Keep it to eight KPIs at most.
Can a foreign investor get advice before registering with MISA?
Yes, and it is usually the better order. Choosing your segment, channels and activity before registering keeps your CR activities aligned with what you will actually sell and avoids later amendments.
