Google Business Profile Optimization for Saudi Businesses (2026)
A practical 2026 guide to Google Business Profile optimization in Saudi Arabia: categories, the new name rule, photos, posts, reviews and a monthly Google Maps checklist.

Your business is already on Google Maps, yet a competitor two streets away keeps showing up first. Google Business Profile optimization closes that gap: the right category, your real name, complete details, real photos, genuine reviews with replies, and matching details everywhere. This guide covers each step for Saudi businesses, including two recent Google changes, and ends with a monthly checklist. No profile yet? Start with getting your business on Google Maps in Riyadh.
How does Google decide who ranks first on Google Maps?
Google ranks local results on three factors: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher or the place they typed), and prominence (how well known your business is). Google states that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking (Google: tips to improve your local ranking).
| Factor | What Google looks at | What you control |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | How closely your profile matches the search | Primary category, services, description, attributes |
| Distance | How far you are from the searcher or the searched area | Only an accurate map pin and honest service areas |
| Prominence | Reviews, rating, and what the web says about you: links, articles, directories | Genuine reviews, replies, consistent listings, a useful website |
Distance explains why you may rank third for someone in Al Olaya and tenth for someone in Al Malqa. You can't move your shop, so the work goes into relevance and prominence. A business further away can still outrank a nearer one if it is more likely to have what the searcher wants.
Which categories should you choose for your profile?
Your primary category is the most important single choice on your profile. Choose the one that describes your business as a whole, as specifically as the list allows. Google allows one primary category and up to 9 additional ones, and its category help page advises using as few as possible.
Google's own example is a grocery store with a pharmacy and a deli inside: "Grocery store" is the primary category, and "Pharmacy" and "Deli" are additional ones.
How to find the right primary category
- Search for your main service on Google Maps the way customers do, in Arabic and in English. For example, "مغسلة ملابس" and "laundry".
- Open the top three profiles. The category shown under each business name is its primary category.
- In your profile, type a few candidates and pick the most specific honest match. A specific cuisine or trade usually beats a broad label like "Restaurant" or "Contractor".
- Add extra categories only for things a customer can buy from you today.
Category mistakes to avoid
- A broad category because it sounds bigger. It makes you less relevant.
- Categories for services you don't offer.
- Changing the primary category often. Google may review or reject significant category edits.
Should your business name be in Arabic, English or both?
One form, not both. Google's guidelines say your profile name must match your real-world name, as used on your sign, website and stationery. In 2026 Google added "repeated bilingual names / script transliterations" to the names it does not allow, even when your storefront sign shows both (Google: guidelines for representing your business).
Google's own example: "Burger King バーガーキング" is not acceptable, while "Burger King" is. For a Riyadh café whose sign reads "مقهى المدار – Al Madar Café", the profile name should be either "مقهى المدار" or "Al Madar Café", never both together.
How to pick:
- Use the form your customers say and search. For most businesses serving Saudi customers, that is the Arabic name.
- A brand known by its English name can keep the English form.
- Use the same form on your website, social bios and directories.
The guidelines also ban extra words in the name: taglines, services and locations. "Al Madar Café Best Coffee Riyadh" breaks the rules, and Google warns this can get a profile suspended. Changing your name after verification may mean verifying again, so decide once.
How do you write a description that helps customers and Google?
You have up to 750 characters, and no links of any kind are allowed. Use them to say what you do, for whom, where, and why you are different. Google's description rules also say to focus on your business itself, not on promotions, prices or sales.
A structure that works:
- First sentence: what you are and where. For example, "A family laundry in Al Narjis, north Riyadh, offering wash, dry-clean and ironing."
- Main services, in the words customers type.
- What sets you apart, with facts you can prove: years open, languages spoken, a specialisation.
- Practical details: who you serve, delivery or pickup, how to book.
There is only one description field, so write it in your customers' main language. Google reviews every edit: most appear within about 10 minutes, some take up to 30 days, so don't keep re-editing. Prefer it written for you? Our Arabic and English content writing team writes each language natively.
What else does a complete profile need?
Everything a customer needs to choose you without leaving Google. Google's ranking advice starts with complete, accurate information.
- Services and products: add each main service with a short, plain description.
- Hours: regular hours, plus special hours for Ramadan, Eid and national holidays, set before they start.
- Address or service area: if customers don't visit you (a cleaning company or an AC technician, say), hide the address and list your service areas. Google allows up to 20 areas and asks that the whole area stays within about two hours' drive of your base.
- Website link: your most relevant page, with UTM tags so Maps visits show separately in analytics.
- Social profiles: one link each for Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, TikTok, X and YouTube, where Google offers the feature.
- Messaging: Google closed its own chat feature on 31 July 2024. Eligible profiles can add a WhatsApp or text contact option instead, so check whether it appears under your contact settings.
- Attributes: accessibility, amenities and payment options. Tick only what is true.
If your website isn't ready to receive that traffic, our bilingual website design Business package includes connecting Google Analytics and your Business Profile.
Which photos help a Google Business Profile most?
Real, sharp, well-lit photos of your place, products and team, added regularly. Google accepts JPG or PNG files from 10 KB to 5 MB and recommends 720 × 720 pixels, with a minimum of 250 × 250. Its photo rules ask for minimal editing, with no excessive filters or AI alterations (Google: Business Profile photo guidelines).
| Photo | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Storefront from the street, by day and by night | Customers recognise your sign and entrance when they arrive |
| Entrance, parking and step-free access | Answers questions people have before they visit |
| Inside: seating, counter or workshop | Shows what to expect |
| Products, dishes or finished work | Shows what they are paying for |
| Team at work, with their consent | Builds trust |
| Logo and cover photo | Makes your brand easy to spot |
Tip: add three to five new photos every month rather than fifty at once. It keeps the profile current.
Never use stock photos or pictures taken from another business. Photos only appear on Google after your profile is verified.
Are Google Business Profile posts still worth publishing?
Yes, as a way to win the click more than as a ranking lever. Google doesn't list posts among its local ranking factors, but posts appear on your profile in Search and Maps. Google archives posts older than six months unless you set a date range, so a profile with no recent posts can look abandoned.
You can publish updates, offers and events, and schedule or repeat posts weekly or monthly. A simple four-week rhythm:
- Week 1: a service or product spotlight with a real photo.
- Week 2: an offer, with clear dates and terms.
- Week 3: a common customer question, answered in two or three lines.
- Week 4: an event, a seasonal note such as Ramadan hours, or a team photo.
Give each post one clear button, such as Call or Learn more.
How do you get more Google reviews without breaking the rules?
Ask every customer, at the moment they're happiest, with a direct link or QR code, and never offer anything in return. Google lets you create a review link or QR code from your profile. Its policy treats rewards for reviews as fake engagement, and it bans asking only happy customers (Google: prohibited and restricted content).
| Allowed | Not allowed |
|---|---|
| Sending your review link to every customer after the job | Discounts, gifts or free items in exchange for a review |
| A QR code at the counter, on receipts or on table cards | Sending the link only to customers you expect to be pleased |
| A polite reminder in Arabic and English | Review quotas for staff |
| Replying to every review | Pressuring customers on site or dictating what to write |
Breaking these rules can get reviews removed and the profile blocked from receiving new reviews for a period. One practical note: for now, Google only lets you generate the review QR code from a computer browser, not the mobile app.
A WhatsApp message you can adapt:
"Thank you for choosing [business name] today. If you have a minute, an honest review helps other customers in [district]: [review link]"
On our own service page we say it plainly: we don't write reviews. Fake reviews break Google's policies and hurt the business they are meant to help.
How should you reply to reviews, good and bad?
Reply to every review, briefly and politely, in the reviewer's language. Google's advice is to keep replies short and helpful, show empathy, apologise sincerely when something went wrong, and keep promotions out of your answers.

Replying to a positive review
Thank the person by name, mention one specific detail they wrote, and invite them back. For example: "Thank you, [name]. Glad the express ironing helped before your trip. See you next time."
Replying to a negative review
- Thank them for the feedback and apologise for the experience.
- Acknowledge the specific problem without arguing.
- Say what you have fixed or will fix.
- Move the details offline: invite them to call or message you on the number in your profile.
Report a review only when it breaks Google's policies, for example spam, off-topic content or a conflict of interest. Don't report a review just because you disagree with it. Google usually takes several days to evaluate a report.
What happened to Google Q&A, and where do customer questions go now?
Google retired the Business Profile Q&A API on 3 November 2025, and the classic Q&A section is being replaced by AI answers in Maps (Google for Developers: Q&A API change log). In the countries where it has launched, Google's Ask Maps feature uses Gemini to answer questions about a place from its reviews, photos, place details and the web.
That makes the rest of your profile the answer sheet. What to do:
- List the ten questions customers ask you most: parking, delivery, family seating, languages spoken, payment methods, booking.
- Make sure each answer appears somewhere Google can read: services, attributes, hours, description, photos and an FAQ page on your website.
- Answer one question a month in a post (week 3 of the rhythm above).
- If your profile still shows a Q&A section, answer any open questions as the owner.
- Use review replies to add facts, such as "Yes, there's free parking behind the building."
Why must your name, address and phone match everywhere?
Because Google judges prominence partly from what it finds about your business across the web, such as links, articles and directories. When your website, social bios and directory listings all show the same name, address and phone (NAP), they all point to one business. Conflicting versions split that signal and confuse customers. For the website side, including local search on a bilingual site, see our guide to SEO for Arabic websites.
What consistency means in Saudi Arabia:
- Name: the same Arabic or English form as your profile, spelled the same way.
- Address: your National Address (building number, street, district, postal code and additional number), matching your map pin.
- Phone: one main number in one format, starting +966, on every platform.
- Hours: identical on your website, profile and social bios.
A 30-minute NAP audit
- Search your business name, then your phone number, on Google.
- List every place that mentions you: website footer, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and X bios, directories, delivery and booking apps.
- Fix the ones you control first, then request corrections from the others.
Your monthly Google Maps ranking checklist
Block one hour in the first week of every month to catch problems early and see whether calls and direction requests are growing. Your performance page shows views, search terms (updated monthly), calls, direction requests and website clicks.

| # | Task | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Compare last month's views, calls, direction requests, website clicks and top search terms | Shows whether your changes are working |
| 2 | Check that your name, category, hours and pin are exactly as you set them | Edits from others can change your details |
| 3 | Reply to every new review; report only policy breaches | Prominence and trust |
| 4 | Add 3–5 new real photos | Keeps the profile current |
| 5 | Schedule next month's four posts | No gaps on your profile |
| 6 | Set special hours for any holiday coming up | Prevents wasted trips and bad reviews |
| 7 | Search your top three keywords on a phone from 3–5 spots in your area | Rankings change with the searcher's location |
| 8 | Spot-check NAP on your website, top directories and social bios | Keeps every listing consistent |
| 9 | Review who has access and remove ex-staff | Protects your profile |
| 10 | Log what you changed and the results | Shows what moves the numbers |
Every three months, also recheck the primary categories of your top three competitors.
On access: keep at least one owner inside your company. Google's manager role can edit the profile and reply to reviews, but it can't add or remove users or delete the profile, so it suits agencies and staff.
Should you do it yourself or get help?
A business with one location can run this checklist in-house, in about an hour a month, once the profile is set up properly. Getting help makes sense if you have several branches, a crowded category, or nobody who can reply to reviews within a day or two.
Manzomia is a MISA-licensed company in Riyadh. Our founder has spent more than nine years building web and mobile products, and apps he launched have reached over 50 million users.
Our SEO and Google Maps service starts from SAR 1,900 per month. It covers categories, photos, posts, review replies, trusted Saudi directories and a monthly report on rankings, traffic and calls from Maps. We don't promise the number one spot, because nobody can honestly guarantee a Google ranking. Your profile stays yours: we work through the access you grant.
Where to start this week
Pick three jobs: fix your name and primary category, send your review link to everyone you served last month, and set special hours for the next holiday. Then run the checklist on the first working day of next month. If you'd like a second pair of eyes first, book a free 30-minute consultation and we'll go through your profile with you, or request a written quote for ongoing management.
Frequently asked questions
How long do Google Business Profile changes take to show?
Google reviews every edit. Most changes appear within about 10 minutes, but some take up to 30 days. Ranking effects take longer and vary by category and competition.
Can I put "Riyadh" or "best" in my business name?
No, not unless it is genuinely part of your registered, real-world name. Google bans taglines, keywords and locations in the name field and can suspend profiles that add them.
Can my profile name be in Arabic and English together?
No. Google's guidelines now ban repeating the same name in two languages or scripts, even if your sign shows both. Pick the form your customers use.
Is it allowed to give a discount for a Google review?
No. Google treats any reward for a review as fake engagement. It can remove the reviews and stop your profile from receiving new ones for a while.
How many categories can I add?
One primary category and up to 9 additional ones. Google advises using as few as possible, so add only what you really offer.
